Chinese Water Deer

We offer species specific options like Chinese Water Deer for a number of our venison products including whole carcass, haunch on the bone and loin fillets*.

Chinese Water Deer, along with Muntjac, are non-native species to the UK and are often seen as problematic to the local environment. These deer browse on the shrub layers of woodlands, which has led to a decline in habitats and nesting areas for many bird species, much to the dismay of bird enthusiasts and gardeners.

Our Chinese Water Deer are ethically sourced by expert gamekeepers, nature reserve rangers, and pest controllers from East Suffolk, who use copper (non-lead) ammunition. Interestingly, this species is more plentiful in Britain than in its original Asian habitats, attracting hunters from around the globe eager to pursue them here.

Chinese Water Deer venison is very highly rated by game gourmets as they taste a little like lamb and have a delicate texture (compared to some of the bigger deer species). Chinese Water Deer are considerably smaller than other native British deer species so this is reflected in the options offered for both the Chinese Water Deer venison loin fillet and haunch on the bone which are offered as lighter alternatives to the usual fallow venison cuts.
